Create local SMTP Relay for use with Office 365

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

Many hardware vendors require SMTP settings to be configured to receive email notifications if hardware fails etc. Unfortunately many vendors don’t support entering in user name and password and TLS connections so to work around this we have utilized the following to configure a local SMTP server on the Hyper-V Host.

Create local SMTP Relay for use with Office 365

Install Windows Server 2012 SMTP Relay
Server Manager
Add roles and Features
Server Roles > Features – Enable SMTP Server – Click Add Features

Configure Windows Server 2012 SMTP Relay
Go in Server Manager to Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager > [SMTP Virtual Server #1] > “Properties” .

Click General Tab and change IP address to local server
Click Access tab > Click Connection > Check “Only the list below” > and add each of the hosts / IP addresses that need to use the SMTP relay > OK.
Click Relay and do the same as Connection settings > OK.

Click Delivery tab > Click Outbound Security > Check “Basic Authentication” > Type the username and password of Office 365 user > Check TLS encryption > OK
Click Outbound connections > Change TCP port to 587 > OK
Click Advanced > Fully-qualified domain name > Type your domain name > Click in Smart host > Type the name of the Office 365 SMTP server ( > OK > OK.
Right-click on [SMTP Virtual Server #1] and Stop and than click Start
